So What is Mesothelioma? Well, it is a rare form of cancer which is found in the mesothelium, which is a protective membrane surrounding some of your bodies organs.
The mesothelium is called something different depending on where you find it. For example: the peritoneum is the membrane that covers most of the organs in the abdominal area and the pericardium surrounds the heart. The pleura is the membrane that surrounds the lungs and is the most common type of mesothelioma cancer.
About 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the United States each year.
Mesothelioma or cancer of the Mesothelium invades the nearby organs and can spread as cancer does when it is malignant. Mesothelioma occurs more often in men than women the risk for this disease increases with age.
Once diagnosed, most patients do not survive past six months. Approximately 70% - 80% of cases diagnosed are caused from asbestos related work environments where exposure occurred over a prolonged period of time.
