Treatments
What are some Mesothelioma Treathere are three major mesothelioma treatments for patients with malignant mesothelioma. The treatments are:
- surgery (taking out the cancer)
- radiation therapy (using high-dose x-rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells)
- chemotherapy (using drugs to fight the cancer
Surgery is the most common treatment. Depending on how severe the disease is depends on how much is removed. For example, some patients will experience only removal of the infected tissue or lining of the chest or abdomen. Other more severe cases will require possibly removal of a lung, part of the diaphram, or the muscle below the lungs.
Radiation therapy uses x-rays to kill the cancer cells and to shrink any tumors. This therapy can involve a machine (external radiation therapy) or from putting materials which produce radiation directly into your body and isolated on the cancerous area (internal radiation therapy).
Chemotherapy uses either a pill or an injection to kill the cancer cells. This therapy travels through the bloodstream and kills any cancer cells in the body. Also chemotherapy may be injected directly into the chest. This is called intrapleural chemotherapy. tments? And how do I get them?
